Reaping the Harvest at Fort Leonard Wood, MO

By Dr. Hugh H. Morgan
Chaplain, Lieutenant Colonel, USAF Retired
Director of Chaplains Ministries, IPHC

One of the many miracles now occurring in our Armed Forces is the great revival going on at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Annually, more than 28,000 raw recruits, men and women from every state, take their basic training there.

Commanders, chaplains, and enlisted personnel have partnered together to reap the harvest of souls the Army is sending to this training installation.

Leading the way is Colonel James Coggin, Commander of the 3rd Brigade, a West Point graduate. God has placed Chaplain (Lieutenant Colonel) Jerry Henderson, one of our senior chaplains, to serve under Colonel Coggin’s command to supervise some five Protestant chaplains and their chaplain assistants.

These evangelical chaplains are preaching the Gospel with a fresh, new anointing of the Holy Spirit. They are seeing on average some 500 soldiers come to Christ each week. They are literally running to the altars every Sunday when the invitation is given. Bible study and prayer groups are meeting in homes, barracks, day rooms, and in mess halls on a daily basis.

Colonel James Coggin describes his experience this way: "Every week fountains of tears flood my face when I see these soldiers running to the altars to be saved." He and his wife, Donna, conduct a weekly Bible and prayer group in their home for senior officers and their wives.
What will be the effect of this revival? Only God knows for sure. We know that these young people will share their faith with their families and friends when they return home for a brief visit before going to their first duty station. Equally as important is the fact that they will witness to their newfound faith in Christ to others wherever they go in the Army.
