The Military Chaplaincy The Challenge The military chaplain is a pastor to airmen, soldiers, sailors, marines, and coastguardsmen and women, depending upon the Branch of ServiceAir Force, Navy, and Army. He or she is a “visible reminder of the Holy presence of God. A chaplain is given an opportunity to nurture men and women of diverse denominational backgrounds in their faith within a pluralistic society. It is also an opportunity to bring those from unchurched backgrounds to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ as they face an uncertain future. Our motto is "A Global Ministry in the 21st Century -- Bringing the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Men and Women in the Military." Our Mission Scripture Text is: "You are following orders, Doing what God commanded when He said, 'I've set you up as light to all nations, You’ll proclaim salvation to the four winds and seven seas!'" (See Act 13:47, The Message) Chaplains have a unique opportunity to be a role model of what a real Christian is all about in the military. Just their very presence with a cross on their uniform brings the presence of the invisible God to service personnel on the battlefield, the dinning halls, barracks, flight line, on the deck of a ship, or recreational fields. The mission of our chaplains is clear: to care for the spiritual well being of military personnel and their families, to provide for the free exercise of religion of all persons, and to offer moral, spiritual, and ethical counsel to military commanders. Like pastors in civilian parishes, they preach, teach, lead Bible studies, celebrate the sacraments or ordinances by water baptism and serving the elements of communion, offer pastoral care and counseling, provide Christian education and discipleship, perform weddings, minister to the sick, bury the dead and bring comfort to the bereaved. |
